S. Jaishankar News: Indo-Japan strengthen ties through bilateral talks, focusing on cooperation, innovation, strategic communication, and cultural exchanges.
New Delhi, Digital Desk || On January 19, 2025, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya in Washington D.C. This marked their second in-person meeting, following their earlier discussion at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Italy in November 2024, as per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
“Good to meet with FM Takeshi Iwaya of Japan. Reviewed the progress in our bilateral cooperation. Also discussed developments pertaining to Quad,” Jaishankar shared on X.
Meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in key areas, including political, security, economic, technological, and people-to-people exchanges. Both ministers expressed satisfaction with the progress of their collaboration and emphasized the importance of maintaining regular strategic communication. Mechanisms such as the Strategic Dialogue and the 2+2 Dialogue of Foreign and Defence Ministers were highlighted as vital platforms for continued engagement.
Minister Jaishankar invited Minister Iwaya to visit India, further reinforcing bilateral ties. A key outcome of the meeting was the announcement of the India-Japan Year of Science, Technology, and Innovation, celebrating 40 years since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Science & Technology cooperation in 1985.
This initiative aims to deepen research and development collaborations, marking a significant milestone in the partnership between the two nations. The ministers also discussed fostering people-to-people exchanges, focusing on technology, education, and skill development, to strengthen the bond between India and Japan.
The meeting underscored the enduring relationship between the two countries, rooted in mutual trust, shared democratic values, and a commitment to regional peace and stability. Beyond governmental ties, cultural and historical exchanges have long connected India and Japan, with links dating back to ancient times.
The growing Indian community in Japan, which now exceeds 40,000, reflects this robust relationship. Areas like Tokyo’s Nishikasai, known for its vibrant Indian presence, and the establishment of Indian schools demonstrate the deepening ties between the two nations.
