Apple Suspends AI News Summarization feature after Misleading Alerts-663

New Delhi, Digital Desk || Apple suspends AI-driven feature that summarized news headlines for iPhone users following complaints about misleading notifications. The issue began when the BBC filed a complaint regarding a false news alert.

A notification, which appeared with the BBC logo, inaccurately claimed that Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering United Health care CEO Brian Thompson, had taken his own life. Other erroneous alerts included one stating that tennis star Rafael Nadal had publicly declared his homosexuality, and another claiming that Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts Championship before even competing.

Apple confirmed that other news organizations were also affected, such as a faulty notification from The New York Times that falsely reported Israeli PM Netanyahu had been arrested.

In response, Apple announced that the feature would be suspended in the upcoming software update. The company stated, “Notification summaries for the news and entertainment category will be temporarily unavailable. We are working on improvements, which will be included in a future software update.”

Apple AI was available in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, but not in the EU or China. While Apple initially planned to update the feature to fix the errors, the National Union of Journalists in the UK urged the company to remove it completely, citing the risks of spreading misinformation.

Apple is now working on a revised version of the feature that will include error warnings, such as using italicized text for potential inaccuracies.

A BBC spokesperson commented, “We’re pleased that Apple has listened to our concerns and is pausing the summarization feature for news. We look forward to working with them constructively on next steps. Our priority is ensuring the accuracy of the news we deliver, which is vital for maintaining trust.”
