New Delhi, Digital Desk || Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, has been awarded the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024. The announcement was made by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on X, recognizing Bumrah’s exceptional performances over the past year.
Bumrah triumphed over tough competition, with Australia’s Travis Head and England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook also in the running for the coveted award. At 31, Bumrah becomes the fifth Indian player to win this honor, joining the ranks of Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010), Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018).
In 2024, Bumrah’s remarkable consistency, precision, and leadership were on full display. Even after India’s T20 World Cup win in Barbados, Virat Kohli praised Bumrah, calling him a “national treasure” for his key role in the victory. Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental in leading India to their first T20 World Cup title in 17 years. He claimed 15 wickets during the tournament at a stellar average of 8.26, with an economy rate of just 4.17. His outstanding performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliance extended beyond limited-overs cricket. As the ICC’s number-one ranked Test bowler, he became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 200 Test wickets, achieving the feat with a remarkable sub-20 bowling average—the best in history.
Throughout 2024, Bumrah claimed 71 Test wickets in just 13 matches, the highest by any bowler that year. He is now second only to the legendary Kapil Dev for the most wickets by an Indian pacer in a calendar year. He also finished as the leading wicket-taker of 2024, surpassing England’s Gus Atkinson, who took 52 wickets.
Bumrah’s standout moments included his match-winning spell against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup group stage, where his 3-14 helped India secure a crucial victory. In the final against South Africa, he delivered an impressive 2-18 in four overs, taking key wickets including Reeza Hendricks and Marco Jansen.
Jasprit Bumrah’s consistent excellence and leadership in India’s pace attack have cemented his place as one of the world’s finest fast bowlers, making him an invaluable asset to Indian cricket.
