BYD launches the Sealion 7 EV in India, with bookings open and deliveries starting in March, aiming for 40 dealerships.
New Delhi, Digital Desk || BYD Co. launched its electric vehicle, Sealion 7, in India on Saturday as the Chinese automaker looks to strengthen its foothold in the country’s expanding electric vehicle market. While the company did not disclose the price, it began accepting bookings for the vehicle at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi.
Deliveries of the Sealion 7 will begin in March, confirmed Shrirang Joshi, national sales head for electric passenger vehicles in India. He added that the model will be available in two variants. Rajeev Chauhan, head of the EV passenger business at BYD India, shared that the Sealion 7 offers an impressive range of 1,092 km with a full charge and a full tank.
Chauhan also mentioned that BYD plans to expand its dealership network to 40 locations by the end of this month. Currently, BYD offers four models in India: the E Max 7, Seal, and two variants of the Atto3.
Sealion 7 will compete with major local players like Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. and Tata Motors Ltd., as well as other Asian competitors, including SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd.’s joint venture in India. As India moves toward decarbonizing its economy, automakers are rapidly increasing their EV offerings.
BYD has been operating in India since 2007 and currently employs over 3,000 people. The company’s push into the electric vehicle market comes at a time when China is imposing tighter controls on the export of skilled personnel and specialized equipment for EV production. Chinese authorities have expressed concerns over the transfer of advanced technology and have advised carmakers not to invest in India, as reported by Bloomberg News.
