Instagram expands Reels to 3 minutes, updates profile grids to rectangular, and makes liked Reels visible to friends, boosting engagement.
New Delhi, Digital Desk || On Saturday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced a major update: users can now upload Reels up to three minutes long. This change increases the previous 90-second limit and aligns Instagram with YouTube Shorts, which also recently extended its maximum video length to three minutes.
The update arrives just before the anticipated TikTok ban in the United States. Despite the change, TikTok still leads with its ability to host videos up to 60 minutes long.
Mosseri said, “Starting today, you can upload Reels to Instagram that are up to three minutes long. Historically, it’s been only 90 seconds, and that’s because we wanted to focus Instagram on short-form videos and not long-form. But we have heard a lot of feedback from creators saying that 90 seconds is just too short. We hope that increasing the limit to three minutes will help you tell the stories you really want to share.”
Instagram is also redesigning its iconic square profile grids, replacing them with rectangular ones. Mosseri explained that this adjustment is intended to better accommodate vertically oriented content, which often gets cropped in the current format.

Another update will make user’s liked Reels visible to their friends. This new feature highlights likes and reactions on Reels, encouraging more engagement while prompting users to consider their activity more carefully if they value privacy.
